Climate Change Misinformation on the Rise

good-ministry-misinformationUnfortunately, the scientists who have devoted their lives’ work to understanding the various aspects of our planet’s climate system have the added displeasure of dealing with a group of people who have devoted themselves to spinning and distorting everything imaginable, when it comes to climate change. This phenomenon, known in some circles as climate denialism, has existed for many years. However, it seems to have picked up steam recently, with the help of a few biased “journalists” (and I use that term extremely loosely) at certain papers in the UK.

I’m sorry, but this is just cool. This is a picture of the Rio Grande samba school in their unique costumes during the celebrations of the Rio Carnival 2010 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

See, I’m like a murderer, see, I’m like a murderer
And I could rip you limb from limb

The Sarah Palin Effect

sarah-palin-winkI’ll be honest. Sarah Palin scares me. And it’s not necessarily because of anything she has done or is capable of doing. My fear is more directly related to the reaction of so many of her adoring, teabagger fans, who are so easily wooed by her charm and lack of any and all substance. She’s like George Dubya Bush on crack, but with a skirt on.

I read an op-ed on the subject this morning, which really took the words right out of my mouth:

Mrs. Palin, you are an avatar of the shameless hypocrisy and cognitive disconnection that have driven our politics for the last decade, a process of stupidification creeping like kudzu over our national life.

Can I get an “Amen”?!

So no, this is not a clash of ideologies, but a clash between intelligence and its opposite. And I am tired of being asked to pretend stupid is a virtue.

Wow. Can we just cut to the chase? If a person has nothing substantive to offer in the debate on how best to handle issues of national and international importance, can we please agree that they should not be given a national stage upon which to spew their ignorance? No, I’m not calling for a federal ban on anything. I’m calling on teabaggers to wise up and find an intellectual ring leader. At the very least, don’t pay someone over $100,000 to babble on about nothing, occasionally throwing in various keywords and phrases to get the audience fired up.

ClimateGate Exposed

Fig_A_lrgWhen it comes to climate change, “skeptics” as they call themselves, have become very predictable. From the very beginning, they have been interested in nothing but using misinterpretations, red herrings, and general falsehoods to spread misinformation to the public. The latest, and perhaps most egregious, example is the reaction to the CRU hacked emails. As this article in the Guardian points out, every major claim made about the emails by “skeptics” is based on either (1) a ignorance or (2) lies:

Almost all the media and political discussion about the hacked climate emails has been based on brief soundbites publicised by professional sceptics and their blogs. In many cases, these have been taken out of context and twisted to mean something they were never intended to.

The author basically says it’s lies, but I throw in ignorance to give those who just don’t know better, and believe everything they’re told, the benefit of the doubt. In this article, the author does an outstanding job of examining the context for the emails in question — something that is sorely lacking from any “skeptical” ramblings on the subject. First, he covers the most repeated quote, which involves a supposed attempt to “hide the decline”:

The full email from Jones says: “I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) and from 1961 for Keith [Briffa]’s, to hide the decline.” The decline being referred to was an apparent decline in temperatures shown in analysis of tree rings. Tree rings have historically correlated well with changes in temperature, but that relationship has broken down in the past half century. The reasons are still debated among scientists. The “trick” was a graphic device used by Mann in a 1998 paper in Nature to merge tree ring data from earlier times with thermometer data for recent decades. He explained it in the paper. Jones was repeating it in another paper.

This statement in that email was basically dealing the issue of divergence in the last several decades between tree ring proxy data and modern temperature data. But I guess it sounds so much more like a massive conspiracy when it is construed to mean that scientists were adjusting the temperature record to make it seem as though the planet was warming when it really wasn’t.

*sigh*

Sarah Palin for Prez

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Absolutely hilarious. Pay attention to the part where Sarah criticizes Obama for using a teleprompter, followed by a close-up of something very peculiar on her left hand.

FAIL.

Oh, and what does this mean?

To win that war, we need a Commander in Chief, not a professor of law standing at the lecturn.

Huh? And people were actually shouting:

Run Sarah run!

Hopefully they meant “out of the country”.
